The Perfect Gift for Mom

| Scott Barbur, Barbur Laskey

Mother’s Day is the one special day of the year that we set aside to show the moms in our lives how much we appreciate them. Finding the perfect gift can be tricky, especially when you consider the sleepless nights, hard work, endless love, and constant worry of a mother. It’s been said that “a mother’s work is never done.” In that spirit, why not do something for mom that she’s been meaning to do, but simply hasn’t devoted the time to yet? I’m talking of course about an estate plan.

Before you stop reading, hear me out. If there’s one thing that moms do impeccably well, it’s plan. But all too often, they plan for everyone they love (you!) and save their own personal to-do list for a rainy day. Wouldn’t it be lovely to take this weight off her shoulders by gifting mom something that lasts beyond next week’s chocolate wrappers and dried out flowers? An estate plan, while perhaps unconventional, represents your love for your mother in so many ways.  By encouraging your mom to have her estate plan in place, you are letting her know that you value her wishes and want them to be heard and followed, you are making her feel cared for, and you are gifting her peace of mind. Truly no value can be placed on the comfort and security that come with an estate plan.

So, this Mother’s Day, check in with the moms in your life. Ask them if they have an estate plan, or if they need to dust off the one they made years ago and update their wishes. Locate an estate planning attorney and offer to go and sit with mom while she starts the process. There are countless ways to plan with your mom in a gentle, compassionate way that erases her fear and worry. So, skip the pedicure and give mom the nudge she needs. Let this be the Mother’s Day you show your mom how much you care about her today, tomorrow, and for years to come.
